I'm personally opposed to ID cards largely because I do not believe they will be as effective as they are claimed to be. They are also horrendously expensive. Further I'm not happy about 1984 society we seem to progressing towards. I think an effective ID system could be introduced over time as people apply for passports, medical cards, or similar documents.

In general I think ID cards are a waste of resources which could be better used in tackling crime in different ways i.e. employ more police, more money for community schemes etc. I worry particularly about any requirements to show ID cards and costs of replacement. Most people lose things like this occasionally and then you run the risk of alienating citizens from the state. The main drive for the scheme seems to be the security industry, not any real demand from the public.

I am personally not against a national ID scheme, providing it is done on a voluntary basis in the first instance. At the moment though, I would vote against it due to cost, security and other issues.
