Local Elections 2008: Manchester

Group Responses

Liberal Democrats (from Councillor Paul Shannon)
Thank you for the question on the important issue of ID cards.

As Manifesto and Website co-ordinator, and Deputy Leader, I will therefore respond on behalf of the Lib Dem candidates.

All 32 Liberal Democrat candidates are standing on the basis of our 2008 manifesto which contains a commitment to oppose the Government's ID card scheme.

All of those candidates privileged to be elected will continue our opposition in the Council chamber to these unneccesary and costly proposals.

All 28 Lib Dem Councillors who were present for the last debate on ID cards (the March 2007 Council meeting) voted in favour of the motion I put to oppose the scheme.

Our commitment to this issue has not changed.

Conservatives (from David Hopps)
I am writing to you as a representative of The City of Manchester Conservative Party in relation to your questionnaire asking each candidate for views on ID cards.

I would like to confirm our position on this issue in that every Conservative candidate standing in the Manchester local elections 2008 is against the idea of ID cards and their implementation. This is also a position the Conservative Party nationally take on this subject. I would be grateful if you update our candidates' positions on this on your Manchester 2008 page.

Green Party (from Steve Durrant, Green Party Secretary)
The way ID cards are being sold to us is (unsuprisingly) misleading. They will not stop terror, they will not counter fraud, they will not be convinient.

A great many individuals in the party will refuse to comply with this grossly offensive legislation.

The Green Party fully support No2ID in their hard work to defend our liberty.

I am strongly opposed to the introduction of ID cards and the database behind them. This is on the grounds of civil liberties, cost, and lack of trust in the Government to look after the data. I also believe that far from protecting us from identity theft and terrorism they may even may increase these problems.

As a student, my peers will be one of the first groups with ID Cards forced upon them, almost certainly in a stealth like way added as a condition for recieiving a student loan. As Campaigns Officer elect at UMSU, I'll be doing my utmost to promote awareness and opposition among the student and local populations in the coming year.

ID Cards are in its simplist terms, charging stupidly high sums of money to the public to keep tabs on them. All arguments for them have fallen. They won't do anything against terrorism, crime, or safety. Instead they will allow potential for future governments to behave in a terrorist way. I don't believe the current institution want to go that far yet, but it's inexcusably irresponsible to risk it.

As Green Party Secretary and a human being who values not having my actions constantly monitored by the state, I have been an active campaigner against ID cards and the NIR from the time when Labour first announced them. I have worked with No2ID and Defy ID on this issue. I was a No2ID regular before getting too busy with party politics, I will return to campaigning with them post-election (hopefully as a councillor)

I find it truly disgusting that we should have our eyes monitored and fingerprints taken by the state just to prove who we are. Not that I will comply under any circumstances. Currently, the small number of people who have to tell the state everytime they move includes sex offenders. In this regard Labour want to treat us all like sex offenders. Hyperbole? Exageration? Check out the facts, it is as vile as it sounds.

50 categories of information will be taken from you at a "processing centre" and aspects of that data will be sold to private companies to help pay the ludicrous costs of this intrusive scheme. Data will also be shared across the EU. Oh, they didnt tell you that did they? (Check out "Project Stork" and the "Prum Treaty")

You can tell I am passionate about this, it is the great civil liberty issue of our generation. I can not over emphaisise what a menace it represents. The spin, distortion and fearmongering used to sell the scheme are sadly what we have come to expect from this government.

Identity cards and accompanying National Identity Register are an intrusion in people's privacy and will prove an extra burden on black and Asian people and youth who are targeted for stop and search by the police. We recognise that we need more than just rhetoric from politicians to see the Government defeated on this issue and so the Left List has called for a mass campaign of non-cooperation with the National Identity Register.
