Local Elections 2007: Manchester

What Did Manchester No2ID Ask?

Each candidate in each ward was asked the same questions:

ID Questionnaire - sent to all candidates

You will no doubt be aware of the plan to introduce compulsory ID cards and a set of linked databases to manage a National Identity Scheme. As this is an issue that will affect each and every voter, I am sending you this short questionnaire so as to determine your position on the nationalisation of personal identity.

  1. Do you support plans for a Home Office agency to track the life-history of every person over the age of 16 resident in your ward? YES/NO
  2. Do you support expenditure of your authority's funds on integrating council computer systems with the Home Office identity management databases and 'verification charges' for council services? YES/NO
  3. Two dozen local authorities, the Welsh and London Assemblies and the Scottish Parliament have passed motions opposing the National Identity Scheme. If elected, will you vote for/oppose/abstain on such a motion? VOTE FOR/OPPOSE/ABSTAIN

Please add any comments you may have:

Thank you in advance for your reply. It is my intention to publicise
the responses I receive so that voters may be clear on each
candidate's position before voting on May 3rd.

Comments: We still don't know what data exactly the Government want on these cards--how much will they monitor us?? All the data will be computerised, almost certainly by a private company. The Government's record on these schemes is appalling-just last week a large amount of very personal data about junior doctors was leaked on the internet--how can we trust the Government to keep our data secure? We don't want or need ID cards--the Government's plans should be stopped.

Comments: I have always opposed systems of identity cards. Fundamentally, I believe that, in a democracy, it is the government which should be accountable to the electorate. It should not be the responsibility of adults going lawfully about their own business to account to the State for their presence or identity. I do not accept the arguments usually put forward, along the lines that it will prevent terrorism, organized crime, or illegal immigration. The notion that ID cards might be attached to access to public services seems founded on xenophobia. I also forsee all sorts of administrative mistakes, which end up causing no end of hardships for innocent people whose cards are lost, stolen, fail to be read accurately etc. I have concerns about data security, and misuse of information both by other state organizations and by unauthorised people who gain access to data via the ID code, which at the moment is kept separately.

Comments: This is an issue on which I feel very strongly. I have previously taken it up with my MP. My fears relate particularly to my family background in Central Europe in the 1940s. I can all too easily imagine what the Gestapo could have done with a centralised DNA database. Please let no one tell me it couldn't happen here. Just replace "Jewish" with "Muslim" and see where that leads you.

Comments: I am very opposed to any centralised government data base collecting the history of any person other than criminals, and then only in relation to convicted offences. I believe this is a gross misuse of public funds and the point of decentralised computer data bases is to allow a plurocracy to exist. So no central organisation has direct access to an individuals details. Where I come from this was called democracy. I will campaign to stop this misuse of public funds. I will be very vocal in opposing the National Identity Scheme on Manchester Council

Comments: I feel that a 'big brother' agency is an unnecessary expenditure with unclear and suspect aims and objectives - too many inroads are being made on our personal liberties under the name of anti-terrorism. Greens in general, and me included, would rather spend money on encouraging a safer world where justice and choice are prioritised rather than paranoia and a climate of fear.
