Manchester NO2ID exists to campaign against expensive, intrusive Government database systems such as the National Identity Scheme, NHS Care Records System, Children's Index and so on. We have four principal aims, known as the Four Rs
:
We aim to raise awareness of these schemes among the public. We do this by holding monthly stalls in Manchester City Centre where we distribute NO2ID campaign material to the public, field questions and encourage people to sign the NO2ID Petition to keep them involved with the campaign.
We have helped to organise film events, both around documentaries like Taking Liberties and popular dystopian films. These events attract a crowd who we wouldn't reach with our street stalls.
We try to attend community festivals and similar events, and welcome invitations to speak at social clubs, mosques and other groups. We support the Manchester Students Against ID group who spread the word at Manchester University and other educational establishments.
Dozens of councils and other organisations have passed motions to reduce the impact of the National Identity Scheme. Not requiring people to hold an ID card to access council services such as housing benefit weakens the scheme and keeps people more safe from it. Manchester NO2ID has worked with councillors and political activists from across the political spectrum to get such motions passed in Greater Manchester's councils, and will continue to do so.
We encourage people to stand up in opposition to these schemes. Apply for, or renew, your passport before you're forced onto the National Identity Scheme. Hundreds of thousands of people have pledged that they will go to jail rather than be forced onto the Register. With their support and yours, we can make identity cards the new Poll Tax, a law which could not be enforced and was eventually scrapped.
Write to your GP and opt out of the NHS Care Records System pre-emptively, to keep your medical records safe.
Even if these schemes are scrapped, we are still all at risk while the legislation that permits them remains on our statute books. We need to keep up the pressure on MPs and electoral candidates to repeal the Identity Cards Act 2006 and related legislation.
Remember that we can only achieve these ends with your help. Get involved, and help everyone understand why it's so important to say NO2ID.
